Civic Design Principles

Design principles to create a diversity of scale and character have been prepared as a framework for development at the Power Station precinct to:

  • Celebrate the East Perth Power Station building as an iconic cultural landmark, through the use of outstanding and creative design solutions.
  • Harness the ‘movement economy’ energy generated by East Parade in conjunction with a controlled, pedestrian-friendly street system to allow mixed-use development to flourish.
  • Bring buildings up to the street edge and reinforce a sense of urban enclosure by placing parking behind or under buildings.
  • Encourage high quality design and materials in all aspects of site and building development.
  • Create streetscapes and public spaces that feel comfortable to pedestrians by including green space and/or green areas.
  • Utilise traditional ground floor design techniques wherever possible; maximise opportunities for street activity by incorporating open and inviting ground floors; and
  • Provide a range of housing choices for a variety of household and income types.
